Pounding.

An incessant pounding stirred Jake from a deep sleep. Someone was pounding on the front door.

“Jake.” It sounded like Gabe’s voice, muffled by the door. “Open up.” There was more pounding, followed by another, “Jake, open up!”

Cooper rose from his curled position outside of Becca’s room and scurried over to the front door, his tail wagging languidly as he sniffed the wood like he could smell Gabe from the other side. The Husky whimpered excitedly.

“When are you gonna learn how to open the door, huh?” Jake asked his dog dryly.

Cooper cocked his head to the side. His tail wagged a bit more enthusiastically, but as expected, he didn’t open the door.

With a groan, Jake stretched before he climbed to his feet, his body protesting every movement. Although he was fully dressed in gray sweatpants and a navy blue, long-sleeved shirt, a chill raked over his body, a dizzy spell quickly following as he straightened.

The pounding at the door continued. “Jake, everything alright in there?”

“Yeah,” he grumbled and shuffled over to the entry. He was feeling worse than before he’d fallen asleep. Unlocking the deadbolt, Jake slowly opened the door. He was temporarily blinded by the morning sunlight gleaming off the snow-covered yard.

Gabe strode purposefully into the house, looking haggard. His eyes scanned the living room as he reached down, absently petting Cooper, then focused on Jake. “You look like shit.” As usual, Gabe didn’t waste any time with pleasantries.

“So do you,” Jake retorted and closed the door behind his friend. Regardless of his appearance, relief nudged its way into his tense shoulders. He instantly felt better knowing Gabe was there to help.

“So,” Gabe said, letting the impending question linger. “How is she?” He ran his hands through loose, blond hair that was longer than Jake had ever seen it, and when he leaned against the back of the couch, he let out a heavy sigh.

“She’s asleep, I think…I didn’t tell her you were coming,” Jake admitted. His friend’s harried appearance made him feel guilty that he’d caused the guy so much panic and worry. “I should’ve called you sooner,” he said in apology.

Gabe rubbed the back of his neck and glanced at Becca’s bedroom door. “You might change your mind about that.”

“Why?”

“Never mind,” Gabe rasped as he exhaled. “You should probably wake her up.”

Jake noticed that Gabe’s collared shirt looked too rumpled to have been freshly donned. “When was the last time you got any sleep?”

Gabe shook his head and shoved his hands into his pockets. “It’s been a while. You?”

Jake’s looked at the clock on the microwave. Three hours had passed since their phone call. “I dozed off while I was waiting for you.”

“Yeah, uh…sorry about that. Something came up.” Gabe’s eyes darted away from Jake’s.

“Are you alright, man?” Jake asked.

“I’ve just got a lot on my mind.” Gabe cleared his throat. “We should probably hurry.”

Jake nodded, not wanting to waste any more time, and lumbered toward his sister’s room. He hesitated and turned back to Gabe. “What’s our plan? I need to tell her something.
